The Myth of New Beginnings

In this fifth episode we acknowledge the new year of 2023 and discuss the popularity and relevance of new beginnings by making new year resolutions. On a deeper more spiritual level we recognise that most things in life are actually cyclic and supports the birth, death rebirth cycle but challenge the concept of everything starting again come January 1st. Here are some of the key themes we explored in this episode…

THE MYTH OF NEW BEGINNINGS

  • Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? Is there an alternative you can do, for example working through intention so it’s heart and soul led. An internal goal instead of what you feel you ‘should’ do from external pressures. Only 9% of people stick to their Resolutions.

  • Is January the best time to be starting diets? What about the pressures around weight and body shape? Especially when you are peri-menopausal/menopausal and your body changes and what your body needs changes too.

  • Can we become more grateful and mindful about what went right the year before and celebrate our small successes.

  • Every morning we are born again, what we do today is what matters most. ‘Buddha’ Would it be more helpful to think about new beginnings at the start of each day instead? That way, you can become more present and let go of perceived failures from the day before.

  • Is setting goals that are perceived as milestones to be achieved at certain points in our lives, actually counterproductive? i.e. we should be home owners by the age of 30 or start a family or be a manager etc…the power of divine timing can actually be more beneficial to explore.

  • Could you think about a word as a theme for the New Year? Could this be more helpful instead of specific goals that come from the feeling of what you ‘should’ do? Some of our shared themes for 2023 include - The Year of the Brave and Sibby shares her wonderful poem about this!

  • Chaos - find yourself within it - don’t loose yourself to it. If we face this in 2023, isn’t it better to be centered and grounded so you don’t get swept up in the fear spreading and scaremongering.

  • Your energy is best spent on creating a new system, a new way of living and being instead of fighting the old systems. We may need to make a stand or protest but essentially if we ‘remove’ ourselves from continually investing in these old ways then they no longer serve a purpose and will come to a grinding halt.

  • Could we look at investing our energy in a similar way to the seasons? So in winter it’s a quiet time where we ‘retreat’ and rest. Instead we find ourselves rushing around buying presents, buying more food, being indulgent and feeling exhausted!

  • Are we missing the real magic that is revealed to us through the cyclic energies and spirals? Our bodies regenerate, our skin and organs, our cycles, the moon’s cycles, the seasons, the summer and winter solstice…the universe undergoes endless cycles of expansion and cooling. The spiral - the eternal sign of the creative and organising principle.
